From the TMO Archives, Nadeem Aslam talks about his second novel Maps for Lost Lovers

But then the mix of politics and art for Aslam seems natural: “Coming from the culture and country I come from – Pakistan – I was always aware of the potential for truth-telling that existed in any form of artwork – painting, music, the written word, cinema. In any of these art forms you could do things that – because they told the truth about existence – could offend the powerful who had heavy investments in lies. In a society which had very rigid rules about every aspect of life, to make the smallest movement was to risk offending those in power. This situation is more or less the same there in Pakistan still and within Pakistani ghettos in the Western world. The so-called leaders and self-proclaimed spokesmen of these communities are keen to take offence. They burn books, get plays cancelled, picket outside cinemas, disrupt performances by stand-up comedians.”

Being born a woman is an awful tragedy… Yes, my consuming desire to mingle with road crews, sailors and soldiers, bar room regulars - to be a part of a scene, anonymous, listening, recording - all is spoiled by the fact that I am a girl, a female always in danger of assault and battery. My consuming interest in men and their lives is often misconstrued as a desire to seduce them, or as an invitation to intimacy. Yet, God, I want to talk to everybody I can as deeply as I can. I want to be able to sleep in an open field, to travel west, to walk freely at night…

Patti Smith ‎- Banga (2012) - Constantine’s Dream

Listening non-stop to Patti Smith’s Banga - intelligent, passionate, and ambitious, three qualities that are depressingly rare in most records.

Ray Bradbury - RIP june 6th 2012

Every morning I jump out of bed and step on a landmine. The landmine is me. After the explosion, I spend the rest of the day putting the pieces together.

Camille Paglia in interview from the TMO archives, talking about poetry, culture, and why the American novel doesn’t mean much anymore.
